The Miamisburg Vikings traveled to Springfield on Friday night, September 11, looking to knock off the Springfield Wildcats and continue building momentum as the season moves along. For three quarters, the Vikings showed they could go toe-to-toe with one of the better teams on their schedule. Unfortunately, one difficult quarter proved to be the difference.

Springfield used a dominant second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 27-7 halftime advantage, eventually going on to defeat the Vikings 41-14. Despite the final score, Miamisburg showed plenty of positives throughout the night and will now turn its attention toward a much-anticipated return home for Homecoming.

The Vikings could not have asked for a better start.

On their first offensive series of the game, quarterback Finn Freshwater found Brydon Martin wide open down the field, and Martin did the rest, turning the long completion into a touchdown. The big play immediately gave Miamisburg a 7-0 lead and provided the Vikings with exactly the kind of fast start they were looking for on the road.

The Miamisburg defense followed that up with an impressive opening possession of its own, forcing a turnover and putting the offense back on the field with an opportunity to build on its early advantage.

Springfield would threaten to answer, but the Vikings’ defense came through with one of the biggest plays of the opening quarter.

With the Wildcats facing a fourth-down situation at the goal line, Miamisburg stood its ground and came up with a crucial stop to keep Springfield off the scoreboard. The goal-line stand preserved the Vikings’ 7-0 lead and capped off an impressive opening quarter for Miamisburg.

After one quarter, the Vikings had every reason to feel good about where they stood.

They had scored on their opening possession, forced a turnover and stopped Springfield at the goal line. Most importantly, Miamisburg had established early that it was capable of playing with the Wildcats.

The second quarter, however, completely changed the complexion of the game.

Springfield began finding its rhythm offensively and made a flurry of plays that allowed the Wildcats to quickly erase the Vikings’ lead. What had been a 7-0 Miamisburg advantage after the opening quarter turned into a 27-7 Springfield lead by the time the first half came to a close.

The Vikings struggled to generate much offensively during the first half after their explosive opening drive, while Springfield capitalized on its opportunities and took control of the game.

It was a frustrating quarter for Miamisburg, but the Vikings had 24 minutes of football remaining to respond.

And respond they did.

Miamisburg came out of halftime with renewed energy and immediately went back to work. Freshwater and Martin connected for their second touchdown of the night, giving the Vikings another explosive scoring play and cutting Springfield’s lead to 27-14.

The touchdown was exactly the type of response Miamisburg needed coming out of the locker room. Rather than allowing the second-quarter struggles to carry over into the second half, the Vikings came out fighting and showed that they were not ready to go quietly.

The Vikings had pulled within two scores and had momentum on their side.

Unfortunately, Springfield answered.

The Wildcats found the end zone once more during the third quarter, pushing their advantage back to three touchdowns and making the comeback considerably more difficult. Springfield added another touchdown in the fourth quarter to ultimately make the final score 41-14.

While the final margin was not indicative of the way the Vikings competed for much of the night, there is plenty for Miamisburg to take from the game as it moves forward.

The Vikings essentially played Springfield even in three of the four quarters. The opening quarter belonged to Miamisburg, and the Vikings came out of halftime and battled back in the third. The fourth quarter was also a much more competitive period than the final score might suggest.

The difference was the second quarter.

Against a quality football team like Springfield, one bad quarter can be enough to determine the outcome of a game. The Vikings learned that lesson firsthand Friday night. When playing talented opponents, it takes four quarters of consistent football — offensively, defensively and on special teams — to give yourself the best chance to win.

For Miamisburg, the challenge now is to take the positives from Friday night, learn from the mistakes and turn the page.

And there may not be a better opportunity to do that than next week.

After spending the night on the road at Springfield, the Vikings will finally return home for Homecoming when they welcome Beavercreek to Miamisburg.

Homecoming brings with it an entirely different atmosphere, as the Vikings will have the support of their home crowd behind them and an opportunity to put together a complete performance in front of their community.

The goal will be simple: bounce back.

The Vikings know they have the ability to compete. They showed it against Springfield, particularly in the opening and third quarters. Now the focus will be on putting together four quarters of football and avoiding the kind of extended breakdown that allowed the Wildcats to take control in the second quarter.

Friday night did not produce the result Miamisburg wanted, but the season is far from over.

The Vikings will return home determined to learn from the loss, build on the positives and put their best foot forward against Beavercreek.
