The Miamisburg Vikings traveled to Kettering on Friday, September 25, for a thrilling back-and-forth battle with the Fairmont Firebirds. In a game that came down to the final minutes, the Vikings showed tremendous composure, selflessness, and relentless determination to leave Fairmont with a 22-21 victory.

Miamisburg received the opening kickoff and put together a methodical drive down the field. The Vikings were unable to convert a 38-yard field goal attempt, however, and Fairmont answered with a long scoring drive of its own to take a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The Vikings continued to battle and found the end zone just before halftime when Brydon Martin hauled in a touchdown reception, tying the game at 7-7 heading into the break.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter. Fairmont struck first to regain the lead, but Miamisburg responded with a touchdown run from Brayden Carpenter to keep the Vikings within striking distance. Fairmont answered again early in the fourth quarter, pushing its advantage to 21-14.

With the Vikings needing a long drive to keep their hopes alive, the offense delivered. Miamisburg moved the ball down the field with a series of big plays, eventually setting up a dramatic finish.

With approximately two minutes remaining, Finn Freshwater found Tytus Bettendorf in the end zone for a touchdown, cutting the Fairmont lead to 21-20. Rather than play for overtime, the Vikings immediately elected to go for two and the lead.

What happened next will be remembered as one of the defining plays of the season.

Bettendorf came onto the field at quarterback and appeared to fake a run up the middle before finding Bradley Williams in the back of the end zone with a jump pass. The play brought to mind the famous jump-pass plays associated with Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, and Williams came down with the game-changing catch to put Miamisburg ahead 22-21.

Fairmont still had time to mount one final drive, but the Vikings' special teams came through with another enormous play.

After Miamisburg was flagged for offsides on the ensuing kickoff, Fairmont elected to have the Vikings re-kick. On the second attempt, Miamisburg kicker Reece Hammond delivered a perfectly placed, hard squib kick that bounced off one of Fairmont's front-line blockers. Freshman Archie Lewis alertly recovered the loose ball, allowing the Vikings to essentially put the game away.

When the final seconds ticked off the clock, Miamisburg had secured a hard-fought 22-21 victory over a very good Fairmont program.

The Vikings' performance was a tremendous example of what can happen when a team stays together and continues to compete, regardless of the circumstances. We are proud of the selflessness, resilience, and relentless effort displayed by our players throughout the contest.

Miamisburg now returns home this Friday for a huge conference matchup against the Centerville Elks. The Vikings will look to carry the momentum from Friday night's thrilling victory into another important conference battle.
