The Miamisburg Vikings entered Friday night’s matchup with Centerville expecting a hard-fought battle between two familiar conference opponents. Unfortunately for the Vikings, it turned into a night where very little seemed to go their way, as the Elks left Holland Field with a 35-0 victory.
The game actually started on a positive note for Miamisburg.
Centerville received the opening kickoff, but the Viking defense came out strong, forcing the Elks to punt on their first possession. After Miamisburg’s offense was also forced to punt, an errant snap created the first major turning point of the night. Punter Brayden Carpenter did a nice job fielding the loose snap, but was ruled to have his knee down while securing the football, giving Centerville excellent field position.
The Viking defense responded once again.
Despite their backs being against the wall, Miamisburg kept the Elks out of the end zone and eventually blocked a Centerville field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless.
From there, however, the night began to unravel for the Vikings.
Miamisburg entered the contest already missing several impact players offensively, and the Vikings struggled to establish any consistency against a strong Centerville defense. Injuries continued to mount throughout the first half, with Miamisburg losing additional key contributors as the game progressed.
Centerville capitalized and took a 21-0 advantage into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, the Vikings showed signs of life. Miamisburg took the opening possession of the third quarter and put together its best drive of the night, marching the ball all the way to the Centerville goal line.
Facing an opportunity to cut into the deficit and create some much-needed momentum, the Vikings were stopped just inches short of the end zone.
It proved to be another difficult turning point in a night filled with them.
Centerville controlled the remainder of the game in what became a physical, penalty-filled second half, eventually finishing off the 35-0 victory.
It was an uncharacteristic performance for a Miamisburg team that has shown significant growth throughout the season. There are no excuses in football, and the Vikings will have to learn from Friday night, put the loss behind them and respond quickly.
There is little time to dwell on it.
Miamisburg returns to action this Friday with another difficult conference road test against Wayne. For the Vikings, the challenge is simple: regroup, get healthy, learn from the mistakes and show what kind of football team they are by how they respond to adversity.
Sometimes the most important game isn’t the one that just happened.
It’s the next one.
