Miamisburg Grad Kyle Getter Hired As D1 Head Coach

Kyle Getter, a 1997 Miamisburg High School graduate, will be the new head men’s basketball coach at California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif., the school announced on Monday, April 6.

"My family and I are thrilled to join the California Baptist community” Getter said in a press release. "I'm grateful to Dr. (Ronald) Ellis and Dr. (Micah) Parker for entrusting me with the growth and development of CBU basketball and its student athletes. I am extremely excited to get to campus and begin connecting with our players and the campus community. Lance up!"

This will be the first head coaching job for Getter. He spent the last three seasons as an associate head coach on Micah Shrewsberry’s staff at Notre Dame.

"The interest in this position was tremendous," said Parker, Vice President of Athletics. "Kyle's name kept popping up with people I have a deep respect for in men's basketball. We talked to some outstanding coaches with very impressive resumes. Coach Getter's experience winning championships and his obvious fit for our mission are both exciting. My team looks forward to helping Kyle continue our winning tradition in men's basketball."

From 2019-23, Getter coached at Virginia on Tony Bennett’s staff, first as a director of recruiting/player development and then as an assistant coach for two years. He won a national championship with the Cavaliers in 2019.

Prior to his the start of his coaching career, Getter played two seasons of college basketball at Centre College. He then stopped his playing career to work at Hanover College as a student coach for two seasons.

Getter worked on Oliver Purnell’s staff at Dayton in the 2002-03 season. He earned a master’s degree from Dayton in 2004. He also worked for two years at Wright State under Paul Biancardi.

Getter has spent time at Virginia Commonwealth, Marshall, Walsh, Liberty and Radford. He was on Shaka Smart’s staff in 2011 when VCU reached the Final Four.

Cal Baptist finished 25-9 this season. It played in the NCAA tournament for the first time since becoming a full Division I member in the 2018-19 season.

Cal Baptist coach Rick Croy left the program after 13 seasons to become an assistant coach on Randy Bennett’s staff at Arizona State. Croy had a record of 275-137.

Cal Baptist plays in the Western Athletic Conference, which was the nation’s 11th-ranked conference this season, according to KenPom.com.
